3 Key Capsule Wardrobe Items for Apple Shapes

Capsule Wardrobe is a popular term, that has come to refer to a collection of clothing that is composed of foundational interchangeable items, to maximise the number of outfits that can be created. The aim is to have an outfit suitable for any occasion, without owning excessive items of clothing, and we can do this by buying key items in coordinating colours.

Now, whether you want to do a full on minimalist clear out, or just refresh your wardrobe with your basic Body Shape in mind, to find pieces that really work for you… we’re here to help! This week, let’s look at 3 of our key capsule wardrobe recommendations for those of us blessed with an Apple Shape. (We have loads more info on the Redlane blog about this!)

If you’re Apple Shaped, your primary features are:

  • An average to full bust
  • A rounded shoulder line
  • Shapely legs and hips
  • If you put on or lose weight, it will likely be around your middle

Item 1 – Your Ideal Dress

Go for an empire-line dress that fits neatly around your bust, a V-line neck is ideal, with a bit of flow underneath so it skims your curves. You’re going for a cut and fabric that’s not too clingy, but it shouldn’t be boxy, baggy, or formless, either. If it’s too loose, you’ll only look shapeless and give the illusion that your waist is bigger than it actually is… nobody wants to look preggers if you’re not!

Item 2 – Your Ideal Top

You’ll want to be drawing attention to the top part of your body, so be sure to get yourself a good fitting bra! On top, the goal is to creating the illusion of a waist, to highlight your cleavage and create nice vertical lines.

Go for a V-neck shirt or thicker texture top, with a minimum of cling, that is fitted just underneath your bust, with enough space for your belly to be comfy… but again, avoid the temptation to hide in a big baggy potato sack – it’s not necessary!

Item 3 – Your Ideal Bottom

A wide leg flare or boot cut is your best friend. Keep the waistline super simple, no dramatic belts or tie details that will draw the eye there. On the bottom, the goal is to get a great fit, with a bit of a stretch for comfort if you can, and draw the eye down nice simple lines with a flare or kick out.

Go for flat-fronted, wide leg trousers or jeans – if you can get them with a side or back zip on a high rise waist too, that’s fab! It’ll create a gorgeous sleek silhouette with minimal effort.
