Whether it’s your best friend’s wedding, or your baby looking way too grown-up at their communion, occasions can be stressful when you’re on a budget. And being honest, there’s not too many of us who aren’t on a budget these days!
So how do we look stunning, without breaking the bank?
Here’s some suggestions direct from the professional stylists at Redlane, to help you out.
Dress for the Occasion
Things are going to look different for a communion than they do for a wedding, and different again if you’re the mother of the bride at that wedding, or just a random wedding guest! One of our best tips is to let the invitation, the season, and the hour be your guide for choosing the right outfit. For example, for a communion, confirmation or baptism, you can choose an outfit that’s appropriate in a religious setting – don’t be showing the poor priest anything too clingy! But you’ll also want to steer clear of anything overly serious when you’re celebrating a happy milestone in a child’s life. Likewise, don’t be wearing anything heavily beaded or full of sequins to a daytime wedding in mid-July. That’s an opportunity to keep things simpler, and that will usually mean less expensive. Take it!
Mix n Match your Staples
We’ve talked before about a ‘capsule wardrobe’ – a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal or occasion wear pieces. The little black dress is a great example. Having a simple, elegant, investment occasion wear piece that you can dress up with a sparkling fascinator and clutch for one event, and simplify with plain heels and a matching belt for another, will save you a tonne of money in the long run.
Know your Body Shape
Along the same lines, having one or two outfits that you take professional advice on the purchase of, and even have tailored afterwards to ensure a completely perfect fit, will really stand to you for years to come. For one thing, when you know what really works for you, it’s easier to figure out what you should (and definitely should not!) buy on any shopping trip – so you won’t be wasting your money on something unsuitable. And for another, there’s an opportunity to, again, invest in one or two pieces that are entirely flattering for your shape (and we’re not talking size here, your body shape is a different thing!). This will make sure you look and feel amazing for your occasion, and – we may or may not be speaking from personal experience here – will forestall any mad notions to drink really quickly or elaborately because you’re feeling uncomfortable or upset.
Don’t forget, every one of our employees at Redlane is a qualified professional stylist, and we’re only delighted to work with you, in person or by phone/email, to make sure the occasion wear you’re investing in is perfect for you.
