The right coat for your body shape

The Right Coat for Your Body Shape

The best way to look stunning all through the season is to invest in your outerwear, ie coats and jackets, and as they can be some of the more expensive items in your wardrobe, it’s important to get it right.

Finding the correct type of coat for your personal body shape is the vital foundation on which to build your unique style. At Redlane, our professional stylists work with you to determine – and dress perfectly – your individual body shape (you can find some really useful resources in the Style Club on our website). Once you know if you fit closest to an Apple, Hourglass, Pear, Rectangle or Strawberry shape, you can see what type of outerwear will make you look, and feel, fabulous all Winter long.

Famous Apple-shaped ladies include: Drew Barrymore, Queen Latifah, Eva Longoria.

Don’t make the mistake of hiding your figure under wide coats! Your ideal coat style features an open cut, and a design that skims over your stomach area. Plus, an open front is great as it will visually stretch your upper body. Waterfall jackets will look great on you, creating a flow and balance from head to toe.

Famous Hourglass-shaped ladies include: Salma Hayek, Scarlett Johansson, Halle Berry.

Trench coats are a superb choice for hourglass figures, as they draw attention to your waist and are lightweight so don’t add unnecessary bulk. The slightly flared bottom half also flatters the hips.

Famous Pear-shaped ladies include: Kim Kardashian, Eva Mendes, Katherine Heigl.

Your best coat will be waist or three quarter length, and work hard to draw attention up top. Padded and detailed shoulders will enhance them, and balance them out with your hips, while a big fur collar helps too! We love double breasted options that draw focus upwards, while the fitted styling gives that lovely balanced look.

Famous Rectangle-shaped ladies include: Natalie Portman, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson.

A tailored, curvy jacket will sit well on you athletic types, and choosing a coat that flares out from the waist, stopping at the hips, gives the illusion of wider hips and curves. Belts are great, so a tailored and tucked parka is great, particularly if you can accessorize with different belts to keep that waist tucked and change its look for different occasions. Try to avoid boyfriend jackets with straight up and down shape, they’ll do nothing for ya!

Famous Strawberry-shaped ladies include: Naomi Campbell, Demi Moore, Renee Zellweger.

Open, tailored cuts help to visually stretch and soften your figure, as well as putting the spotlight onto slim hips and slender legs. Wearing loose sleeves offer freedom of movement for fuller upper arms, and a style that flares at the hips will sit well in balance to your shape. Waterfall style works for you too!
